Awasi Iguazú

IGUAZU FALLS, ARGENTINA

Awasi Iguazú, opened in February 2018, is the third Awasi hotel to join the portfolio, along with Awasi Atacama (a 12 room hotel in San Pedro de Atacama) and Awasi Patagonia (14 individual villas located in a private reserve on the edge of Torres del Paine National Park, overlooking the famous “Torres”), all part of the Relais & Chateaux collection. Located on the Argentinian side of the Iguazú Falls, the hotel will adopt the same philosophy as all Awasi hotels: assigning a private vehicle and guide per room to provide guests with personalized services and tailor-made experiences. The 14 suites (including one master suite) are located in a private reserve on the edge of the River Iguazú, just 15 minutes from the falls. Each room is stand-alone, and built on stilts for minimal environmental impact. Guests have their own independence and privacy whilst also being able to enjoy the communal area of the Main Lodge. As well as private excursions to the falls, Awasi Iguazú is developing unique and innovative jungle excursions, which will allow guests to experience not only the falls, but also the fauna, flora and indigenous cultures of the surrounding Atlantic Rainforest.

“The whole place manages to feel organic and earthy — but not earthy. It reminded me of renowned safari properties like Singita Boulders Lodge, in South Africa’s Sabi Sand Game Reserve, and Abu Camp, in Botswana’s wild Okavango Delta, where the design feels elevated yet not out of touch with its environment. To that end, Awasi follows when it comes to meals, drinks, and outdoor activities: everything is included. But it one-ups the safari experience in that each cabin comes with a personal guide (in my case, Paula, with help from Pancho) at no additional cost. That white 4 x 4 Ford Ranger is for you alone. Want to rise early for a jog along the back roads? Sure thing. How about a bird-watching excursion away from the crowds? That’s fine, too. With a staff of 75, including 16 guides, catering to a maximum of 28 guests, the hotel puts service first.”

Additional Information

  • A “head start” to the Iguazu Falls with Awasi Iguazu. We enter the park at its opening time, but from a different location (much closer to the falls themselves). This buys us close to 30 minutes before the crowds arrive at that spot. From this entering point one can access both the lower and the upper circuits. Guests could also head to the Garganta del Diablo from there, but this is an option only suitable for the sporty ones: the first train that takes visitors toward the Devil’s Gorge leaves later, when the crowds arrive, so early birds would have to walk/jog about 3km to get ahead of them. Some guests do this almost a part of their fitness routine and as a bit of an adrenaline rush, but it’s definitely not for everyone! We are still working on more early/late access options, but this is entirely up to Parques Nacionales.

  • In 2019, Awasi commissioned a study, undertaken by external experts, to determine the carbon emissions generated by Awasi’s three lodges as well as the carbon sequestered by the forested areas controlled by Awasi. Emissions generated include staff transfers between properties, as well as emissions generated by guests travelling to and from Awasi lodges from their countries of origin. By protecting and maintaining 340 hectares of virgin forest and native woodland in Iguazu and Patagonia, which absorb over 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, Awasi have been able to offset the carbon emissions from their operations, ensuring that Awasi is officially carbon neutral.

  • Children over the age of 10 are welcome (the private guide and 4WD make Awasi a great option for families as you can go at your own pace). Children between 10 and 18 years of age, pay 50% of the regular rate.

Property Location

Getting There: Awasi Iguazu is a 20 minute drive from the International Airport of Puerto Iguazu (IGR – also known as Cataratas de Iguazu). It is also easy to arrive at Awasi from the Brazilian side: it takes less than an hour (can be as little as 35 minutes, depending on customs at the border) to travel by vehicle from Foz do Iguacu International Airport (IGU) to our lodge. All transfers are carried out by private guides and are included in the all-inclusive rates.
