PLAYA VIK – JOSÉ IGNACIO, URUGUAY
Playa Vik opened in December 2010 (one year after Estancia Vik) and was designed in collaboration between Carrie and Alex Vik, and internationally renowned Uruguayan architect, Carlos Ott. The 19 suites are split between a central building known as the “sculpture” with a restaurant and four sea-view suites; and six individual ‘casas’ (houses) with private terraces and stand-alone baths. The focal point is a black-granite infinity pool which stretches out over the beach and glistens at night with LED lights which mirror the stars of the Southern hemisphere. In terms of activities, at Playa Vik you can surf and kayak in the sea, cycle to the lighthouse and eat out in the chic village of Playa José Ignacio (just ten miles up the coast from the famous Punta del Este).

“I was struck more than once by the level of attention the Viks give to the property: This is no pleasant distraction for an absentee owner. Seemingly every object or design at the Playa had an intensely personal story behind it. When I asked about the semitranslucent walls in my suite’s bathroom, which allowed light into an otherwise windowless room yet still maintained privacy, Carrie told me the idea had come from a Japanese vendor of washi paper she had encountered at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York…”
